NCMS Virtual Education Series: Medical Aid in Dying

NCMS is excited to host a virtual education series beginning in March 2021, running through December 2021. A virtual education event will take place the third Thursday of every month, addressing a new topic for our physician community.

Specific event information:

Topic: Medical Aid in Dying (history of the End of Life Option Act’s passage in Colorado, statistics on the use of MAID in Colorado, patient stories, discussion of the law and legal requirements for all physicians to know, and how to participate)

Speaker(s): Cory Carroll, MD & Michelle Brassil, MD

Overview: Speakers Cory Carroll, MD, a solo-practice family physician, and Michelle Brassil, MD, a hospice and palliative care physician with Banner Health in Greeley, will discuss the state of Medical Aid In Dying (MAID). Learn about the history of the End of Life Option Act’s passage in Colorado, what the law requires of all physicians, how frequently it is utilized, how to participate, and how to connect patients who request MAID with resources if you don’t prescribe the medications.

Objectives

Cory Carroll, MD

  • Summarize the Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) law and statistics collected since enactment
  • Discuss drug protocols, factors influencing choice of a protocol, and methods of administration.

Michelle Brassil, MD

  • Describe the process for serving as attending and consulting physician
  • Identify additional considerations (cost, MOST form, hospice, shelf-life etc.)
  • List resources available to patients/caregivers, as well as providers
