NCMS Virtual Education Series: The Health of LGBTQ Persons

NCMS is excited to host a virtual education series beginning in March 2021, running through December 2021. A virtual education event will take place the third Thursday of every month, addressing a new topic for our physician community.

Speaker(s): Carl G. Streed, MD

Overview: Dr. Carl G. Streed is a primary care doctor and has a specific focus in Transgender Health. He will spend some time on terminology, creating a welcoming environment from web presence to counter for patients identifying at LGBTQ+, health disparities, & how do we tailor specific specialties to better treat patients who identify as LGBTQ+

Carl Streed Jr is an Assistant Professor in the Boston University School of Medicine. After attending medical school and residency in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins he completed fellowship in General Internal Medicine at Brigham & Women’s. Nationally, he has chaired the American Medical Association Advisory Committee on LGBTQ Issues, served on the board of GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ Equality, and currently serves on the board of the US Professional Association for Transgender Health. Carl’s efforts to improve the health and well-being of sexual and gender minority individuals and communities have earned him several awards, notably from the University of Chicago and Johns Hopkins University Alumni Associations, the American Medical Association Foundation, the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, as well as recognition from the Obama White House. As the Research Lead for the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Boston Medical Center he collaborates with researchers, physicians, and staff to assess and address the health and well-being of transgender and gender diverse individuals.

•Recognize common terminology regarding LGBTQ persons
•Summarize known health disparities for LGBTQ populations
•Identify legal and policy issues affecting the health of LGBTQ persons
•Adapt multi-level recommendations to improve the health of LGBTQ persons
