Samantha Humann of Loveland honored as 2015 Wiggins Scholar

Wiggins 2015 - Samantha HumannSamantha Humann of Loveland has been named the 2015 recipient of the Michael P. Wiggins, MD Memorial Scholarship by the Northern Colorado Medical Society (NCMS). She was honored at the NCMS Annual Meeting on Dec. 9, 2015.

Samantha grew up in Loveland and graduated as valedictorian from Loveland High School in 2009, a member of the first graduating class in the school’s International Baccalaureate programme. She spent a year as a Rotary international exchange student in former East Germany before attending the University of Colorado at Boulder where she received degrees in Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience.

Samantha is currently attending the University of Colorado School of Medicine where she participates in the Rural Health Scholars Track. She has been accepted to a select program at the newly launched Colorado Springs branch campus of UCSOM where she will spend her third and fourth years of medical school participating in long-term integrated clerkships focusing on enhanced patient interaction and continuity of care. “Medicine is about connecting with people, listening, diagnosing and healing,” she wrote in her application letter. “It combines scientific knowledge with interpersonal skills. This is why I want to be a doctor.”

The Michael P. Wiggins, MD Memorial Scholarship honors the late Michael P. Wiggins, MD, a past president of the Larimer County Medical Society. One honoree each year receives an unrestricted $5,000 scholarship to help fund his or her medical education.

Applicants must have graduated from a Larimer County high school (or if home schooled, must have graduated while living in Larimer County) and must be accepted to a medical or osteopathic medical school or be currently attending medical school. NCMS is currently accepting applications for the 2016 award. The deadline to apply is Aug. 31, 2016. A review committee will screen the applicants for selection with a preference toward a primary care specialty.
