President’s letter: Fall 2018

As you are aware, the health care system in the United States is facing significant challenges. As a society, we are currently facing issues around affordability, access to care, patient safety (especially around use of pain medications) and cost of care.

The Northern Colorado Medical Society knows that a good relationship with legislators is the key to improving the health care system in Colorado. The 2019 Colorado General Assembly will be the most challenging to medicine in decades and we need to educate lawmakers on the issues about which physicians care deeply: the liability environment, the opioid epidemic, access to health care, interacting with insurers and more.

With that in mind, we host an annual Legislative Night for our legislators and candidates in Northern Colorado. We feel this is a superb opportunity for our physician members to discuss topics and build relationships. Our discussion will be moderated by Matthew Wynia, MD, MPH. Dr. Wynia’s career has included developing a research institute and training programs focusing on bioethics, professionalism and policy issues (the AMA Institute for Ethics) and founding the AMA’s Center for Patient Safety.

This year’s legislative night is coming up very soon, this Wednesday, Oct. 10. I hope all members will make the time for a great evening of discussing health care. There’s still time to RSVP online here.
